25% of all marine species live in less than 0.1% of the ocean, the coral reefs!

Today’s inhabitant and Phylo card set illustration is the Redfish, Sebastes spp. They are a relatively abundant, slow growing long-lived shoaling* fish.

I originally had his mouth open wide for increased action shot appeal, and really liked it. Until, that is, I came back to it after a while and realized that it looked just like a typical depiction of a largemouth bass. Don’t you hate it when that happens? So I closed him up and went with this sorta creepy fish-stare instead. This guy was definitely one of the most fun to do in the set!




*Similar to schooling, it’s the sticking together of fish for enhanced social, defense, foraging and mating purposes.
