  Aluminum oxide to be precise. Quite remarkable stuff. Used in everything from microscope slides to abrasive discs for grinding metal.
  
  My personal relationship with it comes from my days as a sculptor. Aluminum can’t be welded with a conventional torch because the surface rapidly oxidizes. The melting point of aluminum is 660C. The melting point of Al2O3 is 2070C. The metal will melt into a puddle before you can ever get the surface hot enough.
