You know what they say, “The best laid schemes of mice and men, something something something.”

It feels good bringing Oz and Matt into the folds of this new web comic venture. You can expect more mishaps and adventures in the future as they try to live by the scientific method, maybe without thinking their clever plans all the way through. Today’s comic involves the AMC show Breaking Bad. If you haven’t seen it, and love a great drama with a twist of chemistry and dabbings of dark comedy, you really ought to check it out.

I plan to do more of these ridiculous, character driven, strips as a foil to the nuggets of pure learning. You can expect the dramatic conclusion of this week’s comic next week, as Oz and Matt are shot execution style in a ditch. Ha ha. Just Kidding.

You may have noticed that the previous comic was not drawn by me. You may have wondered what sort of tonic I might have taken to bestow mastercraft skill upon my clumsy ham-fists. But no snake oil involved, folks. Longtime friend and partner here at Page 8 Productions, Nadir Balan, has joined the Sci-ənce! team, and he will be drawing comics and blogging with me in tandem. When the website software allows, I hope to have comics where each of us weighs in with separate posts, and I already have collaboration comics planned. I assure you, this will open the doors of hilarity to new levels.
The bad news is, these periodic table avatars will have to go. In order to make it easily apparent who is posting what, I will implement more traditional avatars for Nadir and I. Don’t worry though, I still plan to pick a random element from The Periodic Table of Videos to link to as our sponsor that isn’t really a sponsor.
On Friday, Nadir tackled one of the pillars of pseudoscientific misunderstanding: Confirmation Bias. Human psychology is our own greatest enemy when it comes to critical thinking. We tend to ignore results that don’t fit our beliefs. You’ve experienced this anytime you were thinking of a song and then it came on the radio, or if you’ve ever had a dream that came true. Coincidences happen, and it’s important to think one step further and ask “How many times was I thinking of a song and it DIDN’T come on the radio?” or “How many times have I dreamt that my teeth fell out, and they DIDN’T?”
You’ll find many logical mis-steps can be thwarted by just taking the line of thought one step further.
